A Journey to Domaine Joliet: Exploring the Exquisite Wines of Fixin Burgundy
As a super wine geek, I have visited cellar doors all over the world. However, on a recent trip to Burgundy, I had an unforgettable and truly unique experience at Domaine Joliet Pere Et Fils. I drove up a gravel path towards an old chateau and was met by oenologist Benigne Joliet holding two glasses. Benigne graciously welcomed me and shared his family's winemaking legacy as he showed me around his small estate of 4.5 hectares.
I was immediately struck by the picturesque beauty of this often-overlooked part of Burgundy. The vineyards of Domaine Joliet Pere Et Fils are surrounded by an ancient stone wall built by monks more than a thousand years ago. As we walked through the vineyards, Benigne shared his winemaking philosophy and commitment to quality. His dedication to sustainable viticultural practices and respect for the terroir was evident as we walked among the vines.
Benigne then led me to the wine cellar, where rows of barrels lined the walls, exuding the distinct fragrance of oak and aging wines. Benigne explained he had sold all the wines he makes, so he would offer me a tasting directly from the barrel. First, I tasted the individual blocks which are harvested and vinified separately. Then Benigne blended the three parcels together so I could taste the wine as he released it to market, an equal blend of the three district blocks within the Domaine. He then offered me a taste of the single white wine he produces from less than a hectare of vines. This is the first time I’ve been invited onto a wine estate where there was no expectation to buy the wine. This was a generous act of passion from a winemaker who is proud (and rightly so) of his exceptional wines.
Both of these premier crus were exceptional! The red wine was dominated by cherries, raspberry and strawberry with soft tannins and a subtle earthiness, whilst the white wine showcased a harmonious balance of vibrant citrus, delicate butter and oak with a lingering minerality. Each sip was an invitation to appreciate the craftsmanship and dedication that went into creating these exceptional wines.
My visit to Domaine Joliet Pere Et Fils was an extraordinary experience that reaffirmed my love of wine and meeting the winemakers. Benigne Joliet's warmth and generosity were as extraordinary as his wines. Exploring the estate and tasting these remarkable wines left a lasting impression. I departed with a deep appreciation for the Joliet family's commitment to crafting wines that truly reflect the essence of Burgundy.
