Armadale Cellars Pinot Noir Challenge

The Armadale Cellars Pinot Noir Challenge was not so challenging, as it involved tasting a selection of delicious Pinots from around the world. After sampling 14 different Pinots, I was struck by the quality and individual character of these wines.

Pinot Noir is a hugely versatile grape variety, which can be used for making delicious light to medium-bodied red wines, as well as great whites, roses, and sparkling (being an essential ingredient in some of the world’s most outstanding sparkling wines). Pinot Noir is currently enjoying a massive surge in popularity around the globe, and although Burgundy is its undisputed home, exceptional Pinots can be found in the cooler wine-producing regions of North America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Pinot is pale in colour, with bright acidity and easy-drinking tannins. It tends to be fruity (think raspberries, strawberries, and cherries) and lightly perfumed (violet). As it ages, it will also develop savoury characteristics like smoke, mushroom, and a distinct earthiness. Some of my favourite Pinots reflect the place where they were grown (terroir). Generally speaking, Pinots are at their best between 2 and 10 years after release. Although there are some exceptional long-lived Pinots, I prefer my Pinot when it's fresh and fruity.

Pinot is a fantastic food pairing wine, and for this reason, it goes with just about anything. My foodie friends tell me it pairs particularly well with duck, chicken, pork, and mushrooms. However, I tend to drink it with everything! Try it slightly chilled in the summer months, or drop a fresh strawberry into a glass of Pinot rose for something a little different.

Fun Facts About Pinot Noir

  • The Pinot Noir grape originates from Burgundy, France, where it has been cultivated since the 1st century AD.

  • Pinot Noir, along with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, is one of the main grape varieties used to make Champagne.

  • Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris/Grigio, and Pinot Blanc are all mutations of the same grape!
